The large-scale municipality of Castelrotto comprises numerous picturesque villages between the Valle Isarco, the Val Gardena and the Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites
The mighty church steeple of the chief village of Castelrotto emphasises the aspiration of the municipality to administer a large-scale area. In fact, Castelrotto stretches from Sant'Osvaldo on the slope above the Valle Isarco to the border of the Val di Fassa in Trentino in the high-alpine area between the Sciliar massif, the Catinaccio and the Sassolungo Group. Also the southernmost part of the Val Gardena, up to Santa Cristina, belongs to the municipal territory of Castelrotto, even if the localities of Bulla, Roncadizza and Oltretorrente are often considered to be part of Ortisei.
The varied levels of altitude that the municipal area comprises make Castelrotto a holiday destination for every season of the year. The Alpe di Siusi high-altitude alpine pasture is almost entirely located in the municipality of Castelrotto and attracts hikers in summer and skiers in winter, while the areas extending at 1,000 m a.s.l. are also popular in spring and autumn. By the way, a series of cultural events such as the Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride and the Kastelruther Spatzenfest, a music festival of a famous local group, give variety to your vacation. Castelrotto is part of "Italy's most beautiful villages" and is inhabited by some 6,500 people. It comprises a surface of more than 11,000 hectares, 5,400 of which are covered by the Alpe di Siusi highland.
