Surrounded by lush green firs and an impressive mountain scenery, the Pond of Fiè provides refreshment on hot summer days
Despite of the fact that it is not really large, it is really popular: the little Pond of Fiè has been established in the 16th century by Leonhard von Völs-Colonna as a fish pond. Today, however, fishing is prohibited, but bathing is allowed - and a jump into the waters of the pond located at 1,036 m a.s.l. (max. depth: 3.5 m) is a real pleasure on hot summer days! Part of the Pond of Fiè is protected as biotope and gives shelter to a large number of animals. Near the lake there's also an info point of the Sciliar-Catinaccio visitor centre.
The Pond of Fiè is easily reachable by car or bus. Coming from Bolzano, proceed towards Siusi, and about 2 km after Fiè allo Sciliar turn right onto the street that leads you to the pond, located above the village. From June to October a shuttle bus runs from Fiè to the lake. However, not only the pond itself is worth to be visited, but this is also where a vast number of mountain tours start, e.g. on the Sciliar. In winter, however, the pond is frozen and open for ice skating and curling. It is one of the only lakes on whose surface the snow is cleared in order to make ice skating a real pleasure.
